Community engagement

As a teacher of community development theory and practice I am eager to find ways of bringing 'grassroots' activists and community development practitioners into the structures, processes and practices for building vibrant learning regions and cities.

I look at Dundee in the East of Scotland (see work done by Professor Mike Osborne and Dr Muir Houston) and see how successful they have been in being able to attract and keep not only officers and practitioners, but local people, active and interested in their learning city. There seems to be a sense of strong leadership, good communication between the protagonists, a sense of pride and ownership in the city project and a real sense of working together. I am eager to hear from other people who see their learning city in Europe as having a similar environment for this type of development.
