Routemap: A Tool for Personal Development in a Learning City/Region

Routemap is a sophisticated and carefully worded tool, a set of exercises designed to increase self-awareness, employability and self-confidence in people in a lifelong learning world. They are best carried out with a mentor or a learning support worker who can encourage and advise and be available in case of difficulty.

Scholar academy Saalebogen

The scholar academy Saalebogen (Schülerakademie Saalebogen) is an establishment of regional educational providers where young people can find additional educational offers.

Learning offers that are available here include:
- curriculum supplemental offers
- promotion for gifted/unprivileged scholars
- trans-sectoral projects

The offers are structured according to themes:
- languages
- arts and culture
- mathematics and natural science
- technics and informatics
- social sciences
- economy
- tourism and environment
- sport and health

Self-evaluation and action tool for companies

The learning network "the changing face of companies" (Unternehmen im Wandel) supports learning processes in SMEs to raise their competitiveness. Through tailored qualifications the impending skills shortage shall be prevented.

In a first step a self-evaluation and action tool was developed. An instrument for the self diagnosis to recognize potential and shortcomings. The core areas:

Service Agency French Salut

Students, companies and employees profit from a counselling offer that is not only focused on the imparting of the French language and culture, but also is a contact point for work placements and jobs as well as for tender offers for the Frankophonic neighbour countries. The Service Agency French Salut (Serviceagentur Französisch Salut)hereby falls back on an existing network of Euro-Info Centres and looks for its counterparts in the respective countries.

Service Learning Case Study - A way of connecting schools with the community in a Learning City

In establishing its Learning Cities and Regions, Europe can learn much from what is happening in other parts of the world. The following description of Service Learning on the West Coast of North America outlines a methodology for connecting older school students to the local community, and thus helping to foster active citizenship, an essential component of a learning city.

SME as an intercultural learning location

A well-functioning communication at the workplace is the key to success, especially when people from different cultures and different native languages work together. Mid-2003, we transformed the medium-sized enterprise PAULO (Ahrensburg) miniatures within the framework of our programme into a so-called “intercultural Learning and Learn enterprise” which wants to negotiate the appropriate education for the long-term unemployed and other socially disadvantaged people. That way the chances for reintegration into the unsupported job market are increased.

South-west Citizens´ Academy

The South-west Citizens´ Academy is a network with about ten locations in the whole of south-west Saxony. It is based on local initiatives and institutions such as senior colleges and youth academies.

In the Citizens Academy regional stakeholders prepare regular educational offers (series of lectures, learning festivals, learn projects, education events, excursions etc.) for all citizens. Through the use of media (internet, local cable networks, libraries) these offers are made available also to immobile citizens and underpriviledged target groups.

Southampton City Charter

In the ELLI definition a charter is a document or a declaration containing guidelines or action points which any organisation can convert into a commitment to implement in practice.

This attached charter developed for the European Conference of Learning Cities in Southampton cleverly uses the initial letters of the city to make its point about the city as a Learning City.

Southampton City Council - Case Study of Implementing Learning Organisation Principles in a Local Authority

The City of Southampton in the UK was one of the first to declare itself a Learning City in 1997. To this end it has implemented many learning city initiatives from which others can learn.
