Educational counselling in various forms is the central theme of this learning region. It includes developing a school network to give more chances to pupils of the Secondary General Schools (Hauptschule), qualification for job returners, developing praxis oriented academical education, implementing educational services for SMEs and developing intercultural educational units.

Osdorfer Born is a quarter of Hamburg, in which mainly underpriviledged and socially disadvantaged people live. The part of the population with a migrant background is very high. People coming from different countries live side by side on a limited space. As part of the learning region project the idea was born to build up a public internet café.

Further those skills and competencies are changing ever more rapidly as the nature of work changes. Like in a "real" stock market, also here something is sought-after and offered, but not shares or value papers. The matter here is to learn something new in self organised groups, and to get across knowledge and experience - free of charge. The idea is to fish for hidden treasuries - knowledge treasuries in the heads of the people living in the region.

L-Points: "Learning service points"

A central task of the Learning Region is the setting up of “Learning service points”, or L-points for short, as visible and familiar ports of call for all those with questions on the subject of learning or who are looking for educational opportunities in line with their requirements. These are places where information can be obtained regarding education and learning in the region. Important features of these L-points include:

• information material on a wide variety of further-education providers for advice-seekers to follow up by themselves;

Learning centre Appolonius

The learning centre Appolonius has three core areas: learning with new media, learning counselling and discovering learning. Media, especially internet, PC and computer games form the everyday life of adults, youth and children. The supporting of learning processes in a playful way makes learning easier.

The offers profile pass and competence catalogue are based on a biographical approach. In focus is the documentation of non-formal and informal gained skills and competences. The competence catalogue supports by the determination of individual competences in the field of new media.

Learning Cities for Migrants Inclusion

This is a 2-year LLP KA4 project from 2010-11 co-ordinated by CentroItalianoOpereFemminiliSalesiane-FormazioneProfessionale in Rome that according to its summary 'will maximize the impact of the Vocational Training and Adult Education Actions targeting people with migrant background and will run in medium-sized European Cities, throughout its coordination and integration with the City welfare system.

Sometimes cities and regions have difficulty in determining the initial steps they should take to transform themselves into learning cities and regions. It is often a matter of deciding the priorities. The attached file is an exercise that any city or region can use to determine its development priorities. Learning Counsellors - Skills for Tomorrow's Teachers

In a Lifelong Learning City or Region in which stakeholders cooperate more freely, learners proliferate and effective learning is the goal, the skills of the Educators will become much more comprehensive and wide-ranging. The attached chart describes the skills and competencies of future educators who will be able to teach - or rather enable people to learn - in a variety of educational environments.

Learning Information Centre

Since April 2004, information and advice can be obtained at the “Learning-Information Centre” on all subjects and questions relating to education and further study. The organisation Lernladen Neumünster e.V. set up this "centre" in the
customer centre of a major regional daily newspaper in the heart of Neumünster.
This cooperation guarantees low-threshold access to learning and further study. Even groups of persons who have been previously remote from education can be reached
more easily.
