LR Lake of Constance - Further training of teachers “Lake of Constance compact”

In the further training of teachers “Lake of Constance compact” regional knowledge is conveyed and ways shown how the landscape of the Lake of Constance can be introduced into the tuition. At the same time the teachers learn to know places around the lake, which are especially worth to visit with a school class. The further education lasts for four days, thereby 2 topics per day are taught.

Out-of-school learning has a high value within the education in the schools. In the course the teachers learn to know more about interesting out-of-school places and themes, but also get valuable suggestions and specialized knowledge for the tuition in the classroom. Concerning the learning places a regional covering is paid attention to. The further education is available for the administrative district Constance, the district Lake of Constance and for the canton Thurgau.

In the course knowledge about the Lake of Constance is presented in a captivating way on selected learning places in nature. The topics include:

  1. History around the lake – the area in a historic review. Selected places of younger and older history are visited. The topics range from the Roman times to the dark days of the Third Empire.
  2. Geology/ landscape history – how did the lake as we know it come into existence? How did it look thousands of years ago? A tour conveys interesting impressions of the landscape today and re-enacts in model experiments the development of it.
  3. Agriculture – farming today and in past times. Visit of an organic farm, getting to know the work of farmers and the various branches such as cattle breeding, fruit growing, cultivation of land, forestry, tourism, farm shops and landscape protection.
  4. Water ecology – expeditions at or around the lake. The living environment is investigated, the lake, its nature and contributing streams. Skilled personnel accompany the expeditions. In small groups at the rivers or the lake water analysis are made and the environment explored.
  5. Nature protection – fascinating flora and fauna at the lake. The marsh areas around the lake constitute an outstanding ecosystem, which gives shelter to many rare animals and plants. A tour into the largely unspoiled nature is made, where shallow water, reed zones and former floodplain forests and meadows take turns.
  6. Forest – as a learning place. On a walk in nature a forest official inform about plants and animals, forest use (use of wood, hunting), ecology, biota, agriculture, forestry, nature protection and environmental education in the region. Forest pedagogics is an important part of the environment education. A day in the forest combines the learning fields environmental and movement education, social learning and general pedagogics.
  7. Prehistory and ancient history of the Lake of Constance. From where did the first inhabitants come? How did they live? Objects found at settlement sites show earlier ways to live. The history becomes alive by producing weapons and jewellery as in past times by yourself.
  8. Environment education – nature pedagogic offers of the Green School Mainau. The island offers ideal conditions to deepen nature pedagogic contents due to its species rich tree population, the existence of tropical useful plants and ornamental plants, the butterfly house and the market garden.

The learning places are matched to the topics of each individual region. Learning places are among others:

  • “The swimming class room” at the solar ferry Helio. Pupils have the possibility to learn to know the lake, its nature and the ferry Helio and get informed on themes such as energy (photovoltaics, mobility and energy, the solar location Lake of Constance), water protection (the lake as watershed), limnology (life in and on the water) and environmentally sound tourism. The outdoor education with a high degree of experiments motivates for the natural scientific and ecological further education. Besides of the natural scientific knowledge also shipping knowledge is taught (e.g. security on board, social behavior in groups, navigation).
  • “The lake classroom of Kreuzlingen”. The goal is to explore the lake outdoor and promote a sustainable handling of the element water, which is examined in an interdisciplinary and adventure-oriented way. The flora and fauna is investigated as well.
  • “School on the farm”. On the farm the pupils experience all subjects “live” and get a direct insight into the interrelation of the production of food, in sowing and harvesting, cattle breeding, nature and technics, the relation of ecology and economics.

In a folder and on a CD, which the participants receive all accompanying data and information for use in tuition are included.
